Roto Smeets GrafiServices invest in the future

RSDB has today signed a purchasing agreement with Wifac to buy a new jumbo KBA printing press for the Roto Smeets GrafiServices plant in Eindhoven.

The press is the latest generation KBA Rapida 162a, with five-colour printing plus lacquer dispersion in 120 x 160 cm format. This press has extremely short make-ready times, coupled with a very fast production rate of 13,000 sheets / hour. Together, these parameters ensure superfast manufacturing times, thus allowing our clients to benefit from improved time-to-market. The Jumbo press can take care of products that go beyond the usual format, like posters, reproductions, playbills, displays and maps. A single printed sheet can accommodate 50 A4 pages, so the press offers an extremely efficient way to print catalogues, books, brochures and folders. Prior to the arrival of the new press the pre-press department is to be upgraded with the installation of a new Kodak Computer-to-Plate system, leading to the optimisation of workflow (PrInergy) and production equipment. Installation is planned for the last quarter of 2008. The Jumbo press will be operational at the end of January 2009.

These investments in a new Jumbo press and Computer-to-Plate equipment form part of RSDB’s medium-term business plan for Roto Smeets GrafiServices. At the end of 2007, as part of the same plan, a 70 x 100 cm Heidelberg XL five-colour press with lacquer dispersion was installed in Eindhoven, while two Heidelberg XL presses, one with lacquer dispersion, were installed at Roto Smeets GrafiServices Utrecht in 2008. The GrafiServer workflow management system, which we ourselves developed in 2007, allows customers to deliver their files on-line, with immediate quality feedback. The digital files can be used directly to make the printing plates, so the printing process can be started up within 15 minutes. Not a second is lost, while customers get reliable, ISO-12647 quality printing, since both Roto Smeets GrafiServices plants are fully certified under this international standard.
